Digitalisation and Age Culture in Organisations: SYNTHESIS

Working Group 2 investigates how organizations respond to an aging workforce in a digitalized economy. The synthesis highlights strategies to bridge the digital divide and enhance older employees’ engagement, such as inclusive HR practices and intergenerational knowledge transfer. Country profiles show varied efforts, with the UK and Sweden being proactive, while Albania and North Macedonia face significant challenges.

The aim of Working Group 2 is:

Feature One

to collect and share knowledge about age cultures, ageism and age-related discrimination, and lifelong learning in organisations

Feature Two

to analyse existing data, map good practices and synthesise existing research

Feature Three

to critically reflect upon concepts like “older workers”, “later life” and other relevant concepts to the WG

Matt Flynn

University of Leicester, United Kingdom 

Matt is a professor of work and employment specialising in older workers and job transitions at the University of Leicester. He has worked with unions, employers and third-sector organisations to support older workers including veterans, migrants and care workers into sustainable work. Anabela Mesquita

Porto Accounting and Business School, Polytechnic of Porto

Anabela Mesquita is a Professor at Porto Accounting and Business School, Polytechnic of Porto, where she has taught since 1990. She served as Vice Dean (2007–2018). A member of the Algoritmi Research Centre and CEOS.PP, she leads A3ES’s External Evaluation Committee for Executive Management. Prof. Mesquita has coordinated various European projects, published extensively, and serves as editor for several journals. Her research focuses on education, e-learning, information systems, and innovation. She is also an evaluator for Erasmus+ and European Commission projects.

Maria Varlamova

Jagiellonian University, Poland

Maria Varlamova is a researcher and lecturer at Jagiellonian University, specializing in the challenges of ageing, ageism, and age management. As the coordinator of the Polish AFCC Network, she works closely with the WHO and local communities to create inclusive environments for older adults. Her teaching combines data analysis, artificial intelligence, and social policies, equipping students with tools to tackle pressing social issues. Beyond academia, Maria consults on policy development, evaluation, and mainstreaming ageing.
